This antique map titled ‘Tavrica Chersonesvs’ was created in 1665 and depicts the region of Ukraine in the early 17th Century. ‘Tavrica Chersonesvs’ translates to ‘Tauric Chersonese’ which was the ancient name for the Crimean Peninsula. The map shows the central regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv, Donetsk and Kharkiv, as well as its borders with neighbouring countries, particularly Russia.
During the early 17th Century, Ukraine was a part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and was divided into several administrative regions. The region was known for its rich agricultural lands and was an important trading hub, due to its location between Europe and Asia. However, Ukraine faced frequent attacks from its neighbours, particularly Russia, which sought to expand its territory.
