This antique map, created in 1665 and titled ‘Cyclades Insvlae’, depicts the group of islands in the Aegean Sea known as the Cyclades. In the early 17th Century, Greece was under Ottoman rule and experienced a decline in its cultural and economic prominence. However, Greece still held significant historical and cultural significance as the birthplace of Western philosophy and democracy. The Cyclades islands were known for their unique architecture, white-washed buildings, and blue-domed churches. Kos, located in the south-eastern Aegean, was a hub of education and learning, while Ermoupolis, located centrally in the Cyclades, was a thriving commercial and cultural centre. This map provides a glimpse into the geography and layout of these historic islands during this period.
