This antique map from 1665 is titled ‘Barbaria’, which translates to ‘Barbary’. This map depicts the region of Libya in the early 17th Century, bordered by Algeria and Tunisia. The central locations of Tripoli, Ghardaia, and Sabha are marked on the map. The region was primarily inhabited by Berber tribes and was a centre for trade in North Africa. The coastline was dotted with various ports and cities, including Tripoli, which was a significant trading hub. The interior regions were mostly desert and inhabited by nomadic tribes. The map may also show some of the conflicts and political divisions that existed in the region at the time.
