This antique map, titled ‘Insvlae Tremitanae’ and created in 1665, depicts the Italian islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The title translates to ‘Trembling Islands’, possibly referencing the seismic activity in the region. Italy in the early 17th century was a collection of independent city-states and territories, with the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples being the largest. The Italian Renaissance had ended, but Italy remained a hub of art, culture, and commerce. The map may show various islands, ports, and coastal features, but the only named locations are San Nicola, San Domino, and Isola di Capraia, located in the central part of the map.
