This antique map, created in 1665 and titled ‘La Bresse Chalonnoise’, depicts a region in central France. La Bresse Chalonnoise refers to the area of Bresse around Chalon-sur-Saône. In the early 17th Century, France was ruled by King Louis XIII and was undergoing significant political and social changes. The country was still recovering from the Wars of Religion and was facing economic challenges. The French language was becoming more prominent, and literature and the arts were flourishing. Paris was the cultural centre of France, and the city was expanding rapidly. Outside of the major cities, France was mostly rural, with agriculture being the primary industry. The map may show some of these rural areas, as well as the towns of Saint-Germain-du-Plain and L’Abergement-Sainte-Colombe located centrally.
