The antique map ‘Candia olim Creta’ was created in 1665 and depicts the island of Crete, known as Candia in ancient times. Greece in the early 17th Century was a part of the Ottoman Empire, and Crete was no exception. The island was a strategic location for trade and military purposes, and its cities and ports were bustling with activity. While the island was under Ottoman rule, there were also significant Venetian influences, as the Republic of Venice had controlled Crete for over four centuries. The map shows the central locations of Heraklion, Nea Alikarnassos, and Rethymno, but beyond that, it is difficult to be too specific about what can be seen on the map.
