This antique map, created in 1665, is titled ‘Buthe Insula’, which translates to ‘Isle of Bute’. The United Kingdom in the early 17th Century was a vastly different place to what we know today. It was a time of great change and upheaval, with the Civil War having just ended and the country still recovering. Scotland and England were two separate countries, with their own monarchs and parliaments. The map shows the Isle of Bute, located centrally between Rothesay, Millport, and Largs. While the map may not show the same level of detail as modern maps, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the geography and topography of the region at the time.
