The antique map created in 1665 titled ‘Gallia, Vulgo La France’ translates to ‘France, commonly known as Gaul’. At this time, France was a powerful monarchy under King Louis XIV and was known for its cultural and intellectual achievements. The country was bordered by Belgium, Germany and Liechtenstein, and was a major player in European politics and trade. The map would show the various regions and landscapes of France, as well as important rivers, cities and towns, including the capital city of Paris. Other major European cities such as London and Geneva would likely be shown in a central position on the map.
