This antique map, created in 1665, is titled ‘Comitatvs Bentheim et Steinfvrt’, which translates to ‘County of Bentheim and Steinfurt’. Germany in the early 17th Century was a patchwork of small states and territories, each with their own rulers and laws. The Holy Roman Empire was the overarching governing body, but it was weak and ineffective in maintaining unity. The Thirty Years’ War had recently ended, leaving Germany ravaged and in disarray. This map depicts the county of Bentheim and Steinfurt, located centrally in Germany near the border with the Netherlands. Other than Bad Bentheim, Schüttorf, and Nordhorn, the map does not specifically name any other places. However, it provides a glimpse into the political and geographical landscape of the region during this period.
