The title translates to ‘County of Waldeck’, which was a small principality in the Holy Roman Empire during the early 17th Century. The map shows the surrounding area, including Medebach, Winterberg, and Lengefeld, which were all centrally located within the principality. During this time, Germany was a patchwork of small states and territories. The Holy Roman Empire was still in existence and was ruled by a complex system of princes, dukes, and bishops. The region was characterised by a mix of Protestant and Catholic territories, and there were ongoing conflicts between these factions. The map provides a fascinating glimpse into the geography and political landscape of this period in German history.
