The antique map titled ‘Perchensis Comitatvs’ was created in 1665 and depicts a region in France during the early 17th Century. The title translates to ‘County of Perche’ and the map showcases the topography of the area, including forests, rivers, and towns. France during this time was ruled by Louis XIV and was known as the ‘Sun King’ period, characterised by its grandeur and extravagance. The country was also embroiled in various wars and conflicts, including the Thirty Years’ War and the Franco-Dutch War. Despite this, France experienced significant cultural and artistic growth, with the establishment of the French Academy and the flourishing of Baroque art and architecture. The region depicted on the map, located centrally between Nogent-le-Rotrou, Rémalard, and Le Mans, would have been an important hub for trade and agriculture during this time.
