This antique map titled ‘Fionia vulgo Fvnen’, created in 1665, depicts the Danish island of Funen, located in the central region of Denmark. The title translates to ‘Funen commonly known as Fionia’. In the early 17th Century, Denmark was a monarchy ruled by King Christian IV, who was known for his grand architectural projects and military campaigns. The country was bordered by Germany to the south, and was known for its strong maritime culture, as well as its agricultural exports. The central region of Funen was home to several important towns, including Ringe, Odense, and Faaborg, which served as important cultural and economic centres. The map offers a glimpse into the geography and topography of the region, with detailed depictions of the coastline, rivers, and mountains.
