Historic Map of America

$249.99 $199.99

A pair of large panoramic maps of the Americas as perceived 400 years ago originally published by Willem Janszoon Blaeu in 1665. These are ‘Museum Quality’ giclée reproductions; long lasting and faithful replicas of the original maps.

This pair of huge old maps shows North America and Canada in some detail. South America was much better explored at the time and is shown quite accurately in comparison.

The final size is huge, will require more than 50 x 55 (aprox) inches to display both maps (one above the other) optimally.

The Size of Each Print:
• 24×53″ (inches)
• 61x132cm

Total Size
…ie. Wall Space Required
• 50 x 55″ (inches)
• 121x140cm

This will require a custom frame, which is not included, or perhaps a magnetic ‘snap frame’ would be the best option for displaying these gigantic maps of historic America.

Atlas Maior
Published by Joan Blaeu in 1662 the atlas from which this map originates set the blueprint (or should that be, the ‘Blaeu Print’?) for all that followed. In a sense the ‘Atlas Maior’ will never be bettered, for it is a most wonderfully sumptuous and ornate creation. You’ll find a garlanded cartouche on almost every page, full-masted galleons upon the Oceanus Occidentalis, elephants and lions on the plod and prowl in the Guinea, huge-hatted men with compasses and globes competing for space with cherubs and unicorns who all seem to be trying to do their bit to help in the mapmaking. The more time spent admiring the 11 volumes of this atlas, the harder it becomes to pick out a favourite map.

Framing Options
Currently we cannot provide a framing service, we are working to address this and we’ll hopefully reinstate Framing Options in the near future.

‘Museum Quality’
Here at ‘the Blaeu Prints’ we produce each map on deliciously thick, textured, matt paper crafted by Hahnemühle. Germany’s oldest art paper manufacturer who have created traditional artist papers since 1584. More recently the company invented digital Fine Art Paper by combining genuine artist paper with an innovative inkjet coating. Papers offer the tactile surface of traditional artist paper with the highest longevity in the industry. In truly archival conditions these papers can last hundreds of years with no noticeable colour shift. We choose Hahnemühle for all our reproduction work.
